Graphics data transfers cause maximum traffic on the PCI bus. The continual increase in graphics demand and complexity eventually made the PCI bus insufficient, which led to the invention of AGP. Now we are pushing the limits of what AGP can deliver, and we need a better solution. By increasing the number of lanes in a link, graphics adapters can take advantage of increased bandwidth and faster data transfer.
For example, a graphics adapter that uses an X16 link has bandwidth of 4 Gbps in each direction. However, a minimum of 40 bits of physical address bits must be implemented. The unimplemented bits should be forced to zero.
These requirements are not applicable to the Windows XP display driver model. In addition to the bandwidth considerations mentioned above, there are several other differences between AGP and PCIe.
By definition, AGP requires a chipset with a graphics address relocation table GART , which provides a linear view of nonlinear system memory to the graphics device. PCIe, however, requires that the memory linearization hardware exist on the graphics device itself instead of on the chipset.
Graphics hardware vendors who want to use nonlocal video memory in their Windows XP driver model XPDM drivers must implement both memory linearization hardware and the corresponding software. AGP was dedicated to graphics adapters, and no other device class used it.
With AGP, a number of video drivers were directly programming the chipset, which gave rise to severe ill effects such as crashing and memory corruption in the graphics stack. Because PCIe will be used for all devices in the system, it is even more important that video drivers not program the chipset directly. Whether they do will depend on the motherboard manufacturers. Resetting the BIOS when it is working normally is very easy. Removing the battery without pressing the button also works.
Yes, there is something different about it. I have not been able clear the BIOS again. Will let it sit overnight, disconnected, with the battery out, and see if that clears it. Trying the password reset procedure did not clear it either: with the password jumper off, it still did 6 red flashes. After reboot without the jumper, it still does 6 red flashes. The machine beeps 6 times because it cannot find a usable video card. If you set compute on both PCI-E slots, you need to get another card temporarily at least.
Not sure that every such card will be accepted. Another possiblity might be to get the kind of card that the compute setting works with. I saw its name mentioned somewhere, will have to find it again. It arrived today. It worked. My spare Z is usuable again. On boot, the monitor displays the 4 pane blue windows logo clearly. On the next refresh of the logo the image becomes very pixelated.
If I recycle the power at that point, all is well. That worked until the last two windows updates, and now unless I back off the update the problem will remain. Clean installs were previously done. No resolve. Remember, if I back it off to a prior release, it functions as it did at install time. Well, this is clearly the issue of compatibility of the card with newer updates or OS, and the solution is to roll back to the previous update or release. My feelings also. Time to buy a new desktop I guess.
