This course combines didactic classroom learning with a fieldwork component that allows you to ease into clinical work gradually. Specifically, you will observe credentialed art therapists working in metropolitan clinical settings and begin to lead treatment for 85— hours in this first semester.
In addition to course work and internship requirements, students in Art Therapy must complete a substantial thesis project that demonstrates both theoretical knowledge and accumulated clinical experience. Upon completion of the thesis, you will present your work in a mini-conference. This is a full-day event, and student presenters are encouraged to invite family, friends, and colleagues. Our degree takes full advantage of the wide variety of training opportunities available in New York, the art center of the world with one of the most diverse and richly complex health systems in the country.
Experts in the field of mental health provide students with excellent opportunities for internships in a variety of renowned settings for training and career advancement. The Pratt Graduate Creative Arts Therapy Department aspires to be a community of equity and inclusion, welcoming a diversity of students, and providing a forum where all voices can be heard. Both of our clinical masters programs help students navigate the changing landscape of our time by integrating traditional psychodynamic theory with contemporary pedagogy.
The Art Therapy profession is in the process of transitioning from educational program approval to educational program accreditation. Both approved and accredited art therapy programs prepare their students for entry-level skills and post-graduate certification as an art therapist.
The American Art Therapy Association encourages you to consider either an AATA approved or CAAHEP accredited program during this period of transition as both types of quality programs undergo a rigorous review process which ensures their resources, curriculum, faculty and policies are prepared to meet your learning needs.
Graduates from either approved or accredited programs use the same process when seeking to become Registered Art Therapists. A brochure for students about accreditation can be found here. I want to become an art therapist, should I transfer or am I on the right track? I was advised by someone in the art education field that it is better to have a foundation in studio art for my Bachelors and then go ahead for the Masters in Art Theraphy.
Had I been advised correctly? I will be graduating in about a year an a half so I would like to get some better advice on how I can be admitted to a Graduate school, majoring in Art Therapy. I have my B.
If I have my B. Im not sure where to start. Would you help me to find out where can i get a credits for basic psychology and also other requirements if its needed? I currently have BA in family and child studies with a p-3 teaching cert.
I love working with others and helping others so I thought teaching was it for me… I currently work as a one-to-instructor for children with autism in which they get art therapy twice a week. I fell in love. I have a strong feeling that this is what I should be doing. Where do I go from here? I thought I could get my MA in art therapy but is that far fetched? I was just wondering how to begin a Bachelor degree in Art Therapy, when my initial two years and a half have little to do with that.
I was oriented wrong, and was lead to believe there was no way to have a bach in Art Therapy. How long do I need to be a resident of NY to be accepted? How do I apply from another country? Thanks a lot for your helpful website. I would love to become an art therapist but I need information on what schools I can go!!!
